Puppy nipping is by far one of the biggest things you want pay close attention to when bringing your new addition home. Obviously, nobody likes a puppy that nips and bites consistently. Fortunately, there are many solutions to this common problem and most are quite simple! Some breeds take a little more time and patience than others, but all pups will get the hang of it with proper instruction, so don’t give up! The biggest thing to keep in mind is that puppies need you to be firm and consistent. Not to mention, when it comes to nipping, you need to start immediately. Don’t plan to do it! It is essential that you begin instructing your puppy not to bite as soon as you notice the behavior. If you don’t, the process will take even longer. The best thing to do is just get it done. The first method that I recommend is simple. First, start by showing a treat to your puppy and then grasp it in your fist so the puppy cannot access it. Most likely, if your puppy is anything like most nippers, he will begin to chew on your hand to get to the treat. As soon as he does so, quickly pull your hand away and look away from him (this shows him in his own language that you are unhappy). Continue doing this until you achieve the desired behavior. Generally, what you want from your puppy is sniffing or licking at the hand versus biting at it. Once he tries getting at the treat using any method aside from biting or nipping at you, immediately reward him by opening your hand and giving him the treat. Although the first method is ideal for puppies that tend to chew on hands, some puppies are very nippy all around and the previous method may or may not work for those puppies. Another great method that implements the same concept from the first is to simply ignore the puppy immediately when he begins to bite anywhere on your body. While you are on the floor with the puppy playing, make sure that you are very observant of him. Allow rowdy play because this is a designated play time. The very moment when the puppy begins nipping or biting at you, immediately stand up and ignore him for a minute or so until he loses interest or waits. Once he does this, get down on the floor and begin to play again. Continue the above steps until he learns that all his nipping and biting is simply causing you to be upset and ultimately, you are no longer any fun. The concepts of these training methods are very important to teach any children in the home. Sometimes, it can be difficult to teach a puppy with the natural inconsistency of children. But it is vital that they learn the ways to teach the puppy, too; often times, the children play with the puppy the most. In no time, your puppy will be an expert. As long as the training methods are implemented correctly, you should have a sweet little respectful puppy soon! ![]() Kady Stansbury is the dash of artistic temperament that makes any site a success. Most unacceptable dog behaviors can be changed. A lot of people struggle with changing dog behavior. Here are a few of the most common behaviors that people have a hard time reversing and the methods most commonly used to curb them. Jumping – This is one of the most common dog ailments. Many people have actually found homes for their dogs because they couldn’t get them to stop jumping on people and children. In reality, jumping is a relatively simple fix when the proper measures are taken. Many people who attempt to get their dogs to stop jumping tend shove them down repeatedly every time they jump. If you do this, you should know that you could very likely be teaching your dog that jumping is ok. You see, by touching him when pushing him down, he is most likely interpreting that motion as petting, therefore he takes it as praise. The best way to train your dog not to jump is by making a complete about face as soon as he jumps up on you. At this point, ignore him until he calms down and then reach down to pet him. If he jumps again, repeat the previous movement. Stealing from the Counter – We all hate when this happens. The best way to really stop your dog from stealing from the counters is to stop making things available to him. If you clean off dishes and counters after every meal, your dog will soon lose interest because there is never anything up there worth getting into. You can also keep a spray bottle with water handy and every time he pokes his nose around up there, squirt him with the water. The only thing about that method is that is must be consistent. Pulling on the leash – Leash pulling can be a huge annoyance when it comes to dogs. It is very important that you curb this issue right away. A dog’s mind works in mysterious ways. The reason that a dog pulls so consistently is because in his mind, he has a strong drive to get further than he is. Although we know we are getting there, his brain doesn’t have ability to be patient unless he is taught. This is why we need to train him to understand. The best way to do so is to refuse to move forward until he stops tugging at you. For example, walk forward and when he begins to pass you turn around and walk in the opposite direction. As soon as he charges past your side, spin around once more. Repeat this until he stops charging ahead. By doing this, you are showing him that by charging ahead and pulling he is not going to ever get anywhere. Soon he’ll learn to walk calmly if he would like to “get further.” Getting on the furniture – I guess you could say that this is a “controversial” habit. Some people don’t mind dogs on the furniture and some people despise it. Whether you adopted a dog who is used to being on the furniture or your pal has learned a habit you’d prefer to curb, it is actually a pretty simple fix. Just as you would a puppy with chewing, the best way to curb the bad furniture manners is simply to discourage lying on the furniture by removing the dog and then reward good behavior by laying him on his bed or blanket and giving him a treat to reward him. There are countless issues that people are confronted with concerning their dogs. Listed here are just a few of the most common problems that people have with their pets. Most of these lead to more dogs being dropped at the shelters. Fortunately, they aren’t so hard to cure that a shelter in necessary.
